Timeline: Scotland's War Dead
To mark the 69th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, BBC Scotland has collated data on the thousands of Scottish men and women who lost their lives during the Second World War.
This data, gathered using the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's (CWGC) online search tool, provides details on 21,740 Scots killed between 1939 and 1947.
In reality the final figure for Scotland's war dead is far greater. BBC Scotland searched the CWGC's database by all Scottish county names -- but due to discrepancies in how data was submitted by families, county was not always recorded by the deceased's next of kin.
Explore the data for yourself by using the interactive timeline below. Hover over the top graph to see how many casualties there were on a given day, and use the second graph underneath to select and zoom in on a specific period during the war.
